Il Comune

In an extreme part of Irpinia, the intense smells of the traditional preparations fill a small town immersed in nature in between two hills.

Savignano Irpino, which is well-known for the typical hand-made orecchiette pasta, is located to the right of the Cervaro stream and it is delicately placed among the green hills which reach the Calvario and the Tombola hills. Bushes of oak-trees and turkey oaks, elms and lonely walnut-trees, along with the very cold sulphurous waters which springs from the Rifieto spring and the Aguglia lake, in Contrada Licenti, enrich the place with their presence. The ancient town is dominated by the Guevara Castle, which is located on the highest part of the Tombola hill, and which in the XVI century was turned into an aristocratic residence. Among religious buildings, the San Nicola and Sant’Anna Mother Church is very important. It is located in the old town centre and it has a central portal above which there is an amazing rose window. Inside this Church there is the Baptistery chapel, which is characterized by an amazing stone portal dating back to the XVI century. Another important church is the one dedicated to the Madonna delle Grazie, which dates back to the XVII century, and which has a beautiful bell tower with a civic clock. Among civic buildings there is the Orsini Palace, which is currently used as the Town hall. It was built in 1727, upon request of Pope Benedict XIII, and it was originally conceived as a welcoming place for the pilgrims who passed through this area. Another important civic building is Casa Albani, which is characterized by another beautiful stone portal. The Angelica Fountain is amazing, and it is characterized by the typical stone swans, from which the fresh waters of the Sant’Angelo Mount springs flow out. This town, located in the Cervaro Valley, is distinguished for its agricultural and food productions: from salami and cold pork meat to bread to dairy products and to oil.
