Il Comune

An ancient village, full of history and of natural beauties, located in the heart of the Miscano Valley and overlooked by a high Norman Tower.

The town of Casalbore, located on a gentle hill, is situated geographically along the path of the Royal Sheep-track (Regio Tratturo) which goes from Pescasseroli, in the region Abruzzo, to the region Apulia. Two rivers mark its territory, the Ginestra degli Schiavoni stream, and the Miscano river. This wonderful natural area is overlooked by the majestic Norman Tower with the majestic Beneventana Gate, which today hosts the Castles Museum. If you walk through the streets of this ancient town, you will see several aristocratic architectural buildings, such as the Maraviglia Palace and the Zamparelli-Maraviglia Palace, as well as the other access gates to the castle area, such as the Vallore Gate and the Fontana Gate. Some of the other aristocratic palaces present here are the De Matteis Palace, the Gallo Palace and the Bruno Palace. One of the most important religious buildings in this town is the Santa Maria della Misericordia Monastery, which was destroyed during the 1962 earthquake, and then rebuilt. In the past, the wooden statue of the Madonna della Neve was located here, whereas today it is preserved in the chapel of the Carmelite nuns. In the so-called Contrada Macchia Porcara, you will find the archaeological area which preserves the remains of the Italic Temple. Just outside town, you can find the beautiful Carcarola and Schiavonesca fountains and, further on, in Contrada San Michele, you can find a cave inside which there is a chapel dedicated to the Archangel Michael. Positioned in a very green area, you will find the extremely ancient Santa Maria dei Bossi Rural Church, as well as an important Samnite necropolis with burial mounds and tumuli. Casalbore is well-known for the unique taste of the Laticauda Pecorino cheese, which is produced with the milk of the sheep breed with the same name, and which is a precious local biodiversity. The production of Marchigiana meat, as well as the production of salami and cold pork meat and of oil are also very important.
